Surgeon calls for ban on contested scrums

BTW THIS IS SCRUM

Sunday, May 28, 2006

A leading surgeon has called for contested scrums to be outlawed because of the unacceptable risk of serious neck injuries.

In an article published in the British Medical Journal, James Bourke, a consultant general surgeon at the Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham, said rugby union should follow rugby league and adopt non-contested scrums.

"It's a question of safety," said Bourke, who was club doctor for Nottingham Rugby Club for 30 years.

"I originally subscribed to contested scrums, but having experienced the consequences of two young men needing to be in wheelchairs as a result of collapsed scrums, I have been forced to change my view."

Bourke's article in the BMJ referred to a report from Australia that said spinal injuries were more common in rugby union than in other football codes. It said no scrum injuries had occurred in league in Australia since 1996, when contested scrums were banned.

it wont be called rugby if there's no scrum!! -teemortee

NZ rugby player hit with handbag, cries!! WAHAHA .. btw Tana Umaga is my IDOL!

NZ rugby player hit with handbag, cries!! WAHAHA .. btw Tana Umaga is my IDOL!

http://www.smh.com.au/news/Sport/NZ-rugby-player-hit-with-handbag-cries/2006/05/29/1148754928389.html

An investigation has been launched into allegations Hurricanes player Chris Masoe punched a patron in the face at a Christchurch bar before being hit on the head with a woman's handbag by teammate Tana Umaga.

A 24-year-old Christchurch man, who did not want to be named, told The Press newspaper he was in the Jolly Poacher pub around 7am Sunday when the incident occurred.

He said Masoe, who had been drinking and playing pool with Umaga and at least one other Hurricanes player, tripped over his feet while he was sitting at the bar.

Masoe then turned and allegedly punched him in the jaw.

"He just hit me in the side of the jaw. I was real shocked. I thought 'what the hell'. It just came out of nowhere," the man said.

"...Then Umaga hit him a couple of times with the handbag as if to say 'you idiot'. Masoe started crying. It was crazy."

The man had not decided whether to lay charges or not, but said it was unlikely.

The handbag's 22-year-old owner said she couldn't believe what happened.

"I mean a handbag, of all things. How hilarious ... he hit him pretty hard. We heard it crack across the bar. He cracked him up the side of the head twice," she told The Press.

In a statement, the team's media and public relations manager Greg Palmer said team management had been advised about an incident involving Masoe and Umaga at a Christchurch bar after the Super 14 final.

"The matter is now being investigated by Hurricanes team management and further information will be provided once the details surrounding the incident have been fully established.

"Due to the fact that information is still being gathered, it would be unfair to prejudge the events that occurred until a full and accurate picture is available," Palmer said.

The Hurricanes lost the final 12-19 to the Crusaders on Saturday night.

LESSONS FROM LEGOS??

Life might be less complicated for all of us if we each received our own Lego kit at birth.

Yes, I realize there is a choking hazard for children under three. But when you are old enough, you can learn
a lot from Legos. I have learned that:

~ There is strength in numbers. When the bricks stick together, great things can be accomplished.

~ Playtime is important. Sometimes it doesn't matter what you are building, as long as you're having fun.

~ Disaster happens. But the pieces can be put back together again.

~ Every brick has a purpose. Some are made for a specific spot - most can adapt almost anywhere - but every
one will fit somewhere.

~ Color doesn't matter. A blue brick will fit in the same space as a red brick.

~ Size doesn't matter. When stepped on in the dark, a 2 x 2 Lego brick causes the same amount of pain as a 2 x 8 brick.

~ No one is indispensable. If one brick is unavailable, another can take its place.

~ All Lego men are created equal (1.5625 inches tall). What they become is limited only by imagination.

~ It doesn't always turn out as planned. Sometimes it turns out better. If it doesn't, you can always try again.

I thought about each of these statements as it relates to the church. Some of the statements apply more than others.

For example, unity is a biblical concept. When Christians stick together, great things can be accomplished.

And it is an important biblical truth that every Christian has a purpose. As Paul describes it in 1Corinthians 12 using the analogy of a human body, some of us are eyes, some are hands, still others are feet, but we all have a purpose and a role.

But while it is technically true that "no one is indispensable", the teaching of scripture is that each one of us is needed and the body suffers greatly if we don't do our part. (1Cor. 12:20-22)

The greatest comparison between Legos and Christianity, though, is that we are indeed a building shaped by God's own hand. And every Christian is a part of that building -- not a plastic building block, but a "living stone":

"As you come to him, the living Stone -- rejected by men but chosen by God and precious to him -- you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ." (1Peter 2:4-5)

i am currently feeling very very low right now. i have never been so sad. todae the results for the President award was released. i didnt get the award. when my captain sms me to break the news to me. i was really sad, deep down in my heart i was so so sad. all these years i have been doing so much in bb making so much scarifices, forgoing to do things tt i realli liked. like in sec sch i would choose not to go out with frens just to go for every single parade from afternoon to evening. my efforts was put thru when i was appointed the csm. after sec 5 i felt tt my interest for bb have died down. things were not the same anymore than compared to the times i was still a boy. now the things tt i do is purely out of a volunteerary heart. after sec sch the sacrficies was even bigger. things like not keepin long hair, dying of hair things tt i want to do but i choose not to do becos of the image i have to portray to my younger boys. i rmbed after my o lvl i chose not to work just to go cambodia, help out in my sec sch bb, help out in de swimathon planning. come to tink of it if i were to do things tt i enjoyed more with the time i might have just got off better. not having to scarifice so much.

like the only reason i was in sp n 19th primers was becos i wanted to get this award, a regonition for my life in bb. 1.5years of primers life. when i could have already gone to officer. but tt's not the point. i mean i have a lready left sec sch and bb could have just be out of my life but i chose to continue and i chose to be a primers to get this award. but ... i dunno ... i am realli disappointed. since school started i have been busyin plannin n doin stuffs for poc, spending sleepless nights just to plan the prog, after we confirmed de prog, there was a change of plans, so we had to replan whic took us alot of time, this went on for months. i kinda grew tired of it. i mean u plan n confirm sth n sth crops up and ppl expect u to change within a week or even daes, forcing u to neglect your studies. i mean i am already tired of having lessons till 6pm almost every other day. im a human and i get tired too lor. i am not a robot. whats worse is tt after the event someone tells u tt the prog for poc have failed the camp n tt was a total disappointment. all those scarifices. ZERO VALUE IN YOUR EYES? and catherine even try to console me by sayin maybe tt dae of interview i was tired. WHY WAS I TIRED? BECOS I HAD TO RUN de camp. so can i put the responsibilty on not getting the award on u? no right. i could have just forget wad u said the other dae in fornt of everyone but now after receiving the results i just couldnt bring myself to keep thinking of wad u sae. WOW THAT BUILD ME SO SO MUCH! THANKS.

i dunno
i dunno wad am i feeling?
wanna cry?

@#!@$@#$^&%!@#$@

so where should i proceed now? stop wad ever im doin?

i am feeling so low. didnt even went for trng.

my life in bb for 6.5years. 2375 daes in bb. just for this day. all the scarifices. wad can i sae?
